Between BBQs, home improvements, and light local yardsale activity, this has been a pretty low-key summer for video game scores. We hit one nearby sale advertising video games. They had a GBA with a few kiddie games. We passed, not even bothering to ask the price.

While we haven't been hitting the sales as much as we'd like, we have made some good progress on our game room. The second round of floating shelf construction has been on hold for a few months, but in the meantime we've done some reorganizing, unpacking, and even purchased a few different bookcase units for various purposes.

The coolest (but most expensive) is this unit by a company called Northfield. We bought four of these and placed them end-to-end along one of the walls. These are our console "museum" shelves. What's great about the various size cubbies is that they accommodate all of the various systems. We came across other units that just had cubes, which were too small for some of the larger consoles, and others that were just open. We wanted a unit with dividers of some sort to enhance the display. Plus, the alternating shelves look awesome next to each other.

We also bought two basic black 3-shelf bookcases to house the systems we will actively be playing, and placed those on either side of the TV. Finally, we bought two 6-shelf "media" bookcases that will hold various console carts (e.g. N64, Genesis, SNES, etc.).

We'll get some pictures of the room up soon.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-18638305762828235822010-08-07T21:44:00.000-04:002010-08-07T21:44:50.909-04:00Week 6 [08.07.10]
Day Total: $20

I drove by this sale while on an errand just minutes from our house. On the way back, I noticed a SNES sitting on a table, so of course I had to stop and take a look. There wasn't just a SNES, but several more systems and a bunch of games. A potential big score. I asked how much for the games while looking through the NES pile. The woman counted the games, which at first worried me. She said "$5". I said, "$5 for all?" choosing my words carefully. You never want to suggest "each" because you never know what they are thinking. She said yes. A good sign - they were asking reasonable prices. I decided to go for broke and asked how much for everything. The husband and wife running the sale thought for a moment, then came back with $20. Definitely reasonable, considering how much was there. There was only one problem.

I had no cash on me!

One of the most important yardsale rules is to always have a supply of cash on-hand. Even if you aren't out 'saling, you never know what you'll stumble on. I told her I had to get some money and would be right back. Again, I broke another rule. Never leave behind a potential score. You never know if someone will slide in during your absence and grab it.

I swung by the house which was just a minute down the road to pick up Dom, and together we raced to the nearest ATM...nearly 10 minutes away. Of course, the whole ride we were imagining that when we got back, everything would be gone.

Fortunately, we were lucky. The bundle was completely untouched. We tried to politely haggle it down to $10, but she was firm at $20. Had I had cash on me the first time around, there was a better possibility for talking down. But when you come back, the seller automatically has the upper hand. $20 was certainly reasonable for the amount that was there. I had expected her to start at a much higher price. Since good game scores are hard to come by around here, and it's been awhile since we've picked up anything, we were fine with paying the $20.

We went through everything when we got home. Sadly, most of the Genesis games were sports titles, which soured the deal just a little. The only "gem" in the entire bundle was Harvest Moon 64, which we did not have yet. Also included was Frogger, the final game released on the SNES. There seemed to be a lot of things "missing". Even though there was a Dreamcast, there was only 1 game (in the system). There were also some Super Scope games, but no Super Scope. Two Game Boy Colors and no games. Several manuals but no games to pair with. We wondered if those items were sold at previous sales or taken by family members, or even still down in their basement.

Later in the day, we stopped by a thrift store that we had passed many times before but always forgot to check out. Though we didn't buy anything, the placed was packed to the gills with all things old. It's definitely a place worth checking out every so often. We found a NES game tucked away on a shelf (NES Play Action Football, already have a few copies), so there's a possibility for video game finds.
Wow. Completely shut out this weekend. Today was a town-wide sale in a neighboring community, potentially ripe with opportunity, but luck was just not with us. It ended up being more aggravating than anything else. Sunday drivers abound (pardon the pun) and subpar sales. To top it off, the skies were overcast and gray.

We went to pick up the yard sale map in the town center, come to find it was $1. Our hometown posts the map for our town sale in the free paper, so this was pretty lame. We took our chances and actually did pretty well. Apparently there were 28 sales, and the sale in the town center counted as 7 different sales (we only counted as 1), so according to their math we only missed 1 or 2 sales.

Only two video game sightings. One dirty Atari 2600 4-switch with 8 games marked $10 firm. For fun, we offered $2 for everything and got the overdramatic mouth-agape stare, followed by an explanation of how it's a complete set. Really? I don't see the box or manual anywhere... The other was a NES with about 15-20 games, asking $2 a game. The older gent running the sale explained they belonged to his daughter (who of course was not there) and she didn't want to sell everything, only the sports games, which he was separating out when we arrived. We quickly surveyed the games and saw only commons, so we passed.

Several sales were down really long and narrow driveways, which of course caused all kinds of trouble because no one knows how to drive or park. At one sizable barn sale, some jerk pulled into the driveway and parked in the middle, rather than off to the side in the grass, and ended up blocking us and a handful of other cars. The sale owner, seeing the situation, told us and the two other people leaving that we could drive through his front lawn to get out. We were first to go, maneuvering across the small lawn and back onto the driveway. As we're driving back up the driveway, which on the upper portion was fenced on either side and only wide enough for one car, another car pulled in and began coming down, definitely seeing us. It was beyond clear that we couldn't back up, and there was no room for him to get by. What does he do? He keeps inching forward! Finally he realizes he's making things worse and backs out. This was the worst of the day, but we had similar encounters all morning.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-23157184608464662702010-05-22T14:09:00.008-04:002010-05-22T14:40:40.640-04:00Week 5 [05.22.10]
Day Total: $0
Unfortunately a bust. Late start, although there weren't too many sales going on. Most likely because there's a town-wide sale tomorrow in our neighboring town, so people are probably holding out for that. So, we'll be out and about tomorrow!

We went out specifically for a community center type sale that advertised manga and video games. That particular table was run by a young couple (roughly our age). They had over 100 English graphic novels (mostly OOP), all complete series and in great condition, plus some random fantasy fiction, bootleg anime box sets, and a few current-gen video games. The highlight was a complete boxed Chobits manga, which Liz was semi-interested in (for the right price of course). They were asking $3 each for the Viz titles, $4 each for the Tokyopop titles. The handful of hardcover fiction they had were priced according to how thick they were. It was after 11AM at this point and it was very clear they hadn't sold any of the manga, if anything off their table. It wasn't worth attempting to bargain. Liz's max was $10 on the set (a reluctant $10), and after 'saling for so long you just know when a person is not going to cut you a deal.

This was weird... At one sale, this guy had two car doors propped against each other on the lawn, for sale. No car in sight, just the doors. Definitely one for the odd list.

Rants of the day. People that write "Huge Yard Sale!" and people who sell modded PS1's and burned games.

The first one is more annoying than anything else. I guess 'huge' is subjective. We've been to well over a thousand yard sales over the last 5 years and have seen everything from 2-3 items sitting in a driveway to full lawns covered end to end with stuff (not to mention those multi-family neighborhood sales that just spill into the next house all the way up the street). Today we hit a 'huge' sale that was a little less than average-sized. Do the people running the sale think that the amount they have is huge? I guess if you're not a yardsaler, then you don't know how much stuff other people have.

The modded PS1's. These are usually never marked as such, but you know when you see that stack of burned discs. And the nerve to sell games downloaded for free and illegally. We come across this every so often and really, how crappy can you get?Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-83745342260167157682010-05-15T20:49:00.003-04:002010-05-16T09:05:25.326-04:00Week 4 [5.15.10]
Day Total: $10.25
First real outing of the season (finally)!

Our town held its biannual town-wide sale today, so we figured it was a good time as any to head out. While we didn't come home with any huge scores, we had a nice morning out and came home with some cool stuff.

We got the Empire Strikes Back poster at one of the coolest sales we've ever been to. First off, it was a huge sale - lots of older toys and knickknacks inside and out. Inside was the most interesting, where they had a whole room dedicated to books and comics. They had a ton of Star Wars toys and merchandise but unfortunately it was all from 1999, around when Phantom Menace came out. There was an older gent running the sale and what seemed to be his grown kids and spouses helping, all very nice. He was only asking $10 for the poster. The poster shows a little water damage (paper has some waves) and light staining, but else not terrible for a near 30-year old poster. Rooting around in the books, he had the two Harry Potter books in great condition (Liz never had the first book in HC and her copy of the fourth book had been damaged). We offered $7 CIF for everything. The older guy, who seemed to be in charge, thought for a moment, and I thought he was going to say something really high (due to the HP books). But to my surprise, he said "I can do $8". We hastily and happily gave him the money. I found the poster online after searching and saw that it can be bought for about $130. So I don't think it's super rare or anything, but still a cool piece.

We picked up the Zelda promo at a later sale that had a Game Cube for $50. They had a whole stack of crap games (mix of XBox and PS2) for $5-10 each, that someone had bought just before us (he was still there, looking through a huge box full of Star Wars fiction). He left behind just the Zelda, which we promptly scooped up and offered a dollar for. The sellers took it with no hesitation.

The bootleg anime VHS were a fun pickup. Harkens back to the old days when anime was not so readily available.

Not one retro game sighting all day. The few we did come across were PS2-era or later. Kinda sad...Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-14858980132005194312010-04-03T11:31:00.001-04:002010-04-03T11:31:25.416-04:00Week 3 [04.03.10]
Day Total: $0.00

Sales Visited: 1

But the weather is warming up in New England, and the yardsale bug is already nipping at our ankles. We are beginning to plan just how we're going to attack this year's season, taking into account the limitations of our area. We have some ideas and are looking forward to venturing out very soon.

Much of our time these last 6 months have been spent not only maintaining our home, but finishing our basement game room. This has been priority #1 and we still have a ways to go. The major tasks included repainting the walls, installing a plaster ceiling (including installation of lighting), installing new carpet, and building shelving. The first two activities we completed by the end of December. The carpet will be installed within a few short weeks, and we're in the process of building the shelves. We decided to build custom floating shelves from scratch in order to ensure we had exactly the right dimensions that we wanted. We have built 8 so far, which are in the final polyurethane stages. We will mount them after the carpet is installed. But we have loads more shelves to build, and it will likely be a year-long project for that alone.

In the meantime, we've kept an eye on our local Freecycle and Craigslist, but as typical with those methods, they did not yield much.

But you can't keep a true yardsaler down! We're looking forward to getting back in the game!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-23803092719997217122010-03-14T16:10:00.004-04:002010-03-15T07:28:57.174-04:00New Blog Location - Update Your RSS Feed!Dear Readers:
Lucky Freecycle score!

The person posted on Freecycle around midday, and Dom just happened to catch it and immediately emailed the guy. We got an email back saying we were the second in line, and if the first person fell through, he would let us know. We were bummed, believing we had just missed it. It's so rare to see video games on Freecycle, and people usually jump on them very fast.

While driving home from work, Dom checked his iPhone for emails and there was one from the guy saying to call him! Dom called right away. He told us that the other person couldn't pick them up for several days. We said we could be there in 15 minutes and we're on our way!

We showed up at a 2-family house and could tell the guy was getting a head start on spring cleaning. He was very friendly, pointing to the boxes upon boxes of stuff cluttering his kitchen and asked if we needed anything else (random cables, cords, and the like). We declined, but a small stack of NES games caught our eye. We asked if we could take those too and he handed them over without hesitation, then proceeded to poke around to see if he had anything else video game related that he could give us. He couldn't find anything in the mess, but said he'd email us if he found something.

The system and games are a little smoky, but nothing a good cleaning can't handle.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-58870386663701755922010-01-04T21:39:00.023-05:002010-03-21T13:20:46.226-04:00Week 1 [01.04.10]

Day Total: $0.00
One of my coworkers, who knows that Dom and I collect video games, surprised me today with his kids' GBA's and games. They are grown and no longer play them, so rather than tossing them or letting them lie around unused, he gave them to me. That was very nice of him!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-71037907579638152912009-06-06T11:26:00.005-04:002010-03-13T15:30:30.763-05:00Tokyo Game Action Auction [06.06.09]

We attended the Tokyo Game Action auction in Winchendon, MA this morning. A sad day for arcades. After nearly six years in operation, TGA had to close their doors due to a combination of flood damage and financial troubles. More details on their website. The owner had no choice but to liquidate the entire business: every arcade machine, every piece of japanese "swag", every fixture, every sign, and even the property itself.

We estimated about 150 people attending (may have been more). It was a great turnout, but it was apparent that the owner was pretty devastated about the whole thing, and understandably so. Several people gave him and his wife hugs and kind words. We couldn't help but feel sorry for him, though. He had built this awesome arcade stuffed with games of which most are only available in Japan. Tons of Bemani, several Astro City cabinets (only found in Japan), and even 4 brand new Street Fighter IV machines. Truly a loss for the arcade world.

So what did we buy?

Nada. We came away with nothing, but it was a great experience. We even bid and ultimately lost on a few arcades. People got some pretty sweet deals (see image right), but we just weren't ready to drop several thousand on arcade machines today. Though there were a lot of "would've been nice to have" items (e.g. any of the DDR's, Pop 'n' Music, Marvel vs Capcom 2, etc), it was clear pretty early we'd be leaving empty-handed.

It was a lot of fun though, and worth it for the experience (not to mention making a pilgrimage albeit rather late to TGA). It was our first auction, and boy do those guys really get your heart thumping! Fast-talking, synchronized shouting when someone makes a bid, the auctioneer convincing people to make another bid - it was really exciting. Suddenly a few thousand bucks doesn't seem like much if you let yourself get lost in it. Dom and I looked at each other several times, torn as to whether we should bid. But we kept our heads and passed on some great deals (just too much for us to spend right now).

Below are some pictures I took prior to the auction.
First real outing of 2009.

The N64 bundle was difficult to get, but it was worth it for Ogre Battle 64. We had to ask for videogames at this sale, and they brought out a bin from inside the house. They had about 25 games total, but everything was in pretty rough shape. All of the games were covered with dirt, Blockbuster rental stickers, scratches, you name it. We offered $2 for the bin, but were immediately rebuffed. We haggled back and forth a bit, but they were having none of it.

At this point, we cherry-picked the good stuff and offered $2 for that. Another round of haggling, including all of the famous lines. "Gamestop will buy these for more", "Ebay", "I paid a lot of money for these", etc. I finally had to point out that the games were in horrible condition, and that they were almost 15 years old.

We somehow managed to get away with what we did for $4, but it wasn't easy. Ah well, it's always good practice.

There were a decent amount of sales for a nice Memorial Day weekend, but we decided to cut our trip short and go home early. I think we're getting old...Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-2785169843962393972009-04-25T15:27:00.003-04:002010-03-13T15:30:30.767-05:00Week 3 [04.25.09]
Day Total: $0.25

Sales Visited: 1
While spending a getaway weekend in New Hampshire, we came across a decent-sized yardsale on the side of the road. Unfortunately no videogames, but we spotted the Pac-man game under a pile of other games. We hadn't seen this particular game before, and offered a quarter which the seller accepted without hesitation.

Just being there, looking around at the various items, rummaging through bins, got us geared up for this season. We got bitten by the yardsale bug again, and we're looking forward to this season. It's later than we've started in previous years, but sales have been slow to get started around here. We're planning on heading out next weekend, so here's hoping for good weather and lots of sales!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-69299003128899448222009-03-22T15:22:00.003-04:002010-03-14T10:57:07.535-04:00Week 2 [03.22.09]
Day Total: $0.00

Sales Visited: 1
Our first find of 2009 comes from Freecycle, which brings us our first piece of legacy Mac hardware.

Overall, we've both had fairly limited Apple experience. Liz had an Apple IIc growing up, and we've both used older models in school a little bit, but that's pretty much it. We've both been Windows users for as long as we can remember, and never had any inclination to "switch" to Mac.

Last year, we started looking into the iPhone, and were thoroughly impressed. We bought iPhone 3Gs soon after launch, and we use them all the time. Last month, we both bought MacBooks, and have been equally impressed. It turns out that Apple has been pretty busy since the IIc, and Mac OS X is a very nice operating system.

This kind of led us to start reading up on all of the Macs that we missed out on in the past 10-15 years, and there's a lot of cool stuff out there! Our love of old technology doesn't exclusively belong to videogames, and old Macs have that certain panache that scratches our collector's itch. We never really expected to be Mac aficionados or anything, but sometimes life can surprise you.

Consider this the first vintage piece in our new Mac collection.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-59230662749661781332009-02-15T14:44:00.006-05:002012-01-08T10:56:29.631-05:00Japan [10.21.08 - 11.02.08]

This entry is long overdue! We spent two weeks in Japan for our honeymoon back in October 2008. It was awesome - words cannot describe what an amazing time we had! We spent most of our time in Tokyo, but also visited Kyoto and surrounding for a few days. Below are pictures of everything we bought (photos taken while still in Japan). Though we wanted to buy everything in sight, we had to restrain ourselves, knowing it would've been impossible to get it all home. It was quite a feat just getting the video games home.

Read on to see all the cool stuff we bought in Japan!
Most of these video games (and the manga) were purchased at the Akihabara Book-Off, which had a jaw-dropping used video game section. At first we were cautiously optimistic, acknowledging the fact that there was a great selection of games, but not expecting to buy much, thinking it would be too expensive. As we got closer and began inspecting the games, we were shocked to discover all the ¥50 ($0.50) and ¥100 ($1) price tags. We filled 3 baskets of cheap games (ranging $0.50 to $5 each), which resulted in 5 stuffed bags and many looks and stares from the locals. We had to go back to our hotel (in Asakusa) to drop everything off! After a quick lunch, we came back and bought a few more things we had left behind, then located Super Potato. While not as cheap as Book-Off, it was definitely an awesome place: 2 cramped floors stuffed to the brim with used video games, and a small arcade on the 3rd floor. We picked up some more games here and at a few other gaming shops in the area. Here are some pictures of Super Potato, just because it was so awesome:
We were specifically hunting for these, knowing that they were going to be tough to find and likely even discontinued. Surprisingly, we found them in the back of a comic shop and picked up a bunch. Good thing, too: we never saw them anywhere else. How do they taste, you might be wondering? The best comparison we can make is flat Sprite.
We grabbed some more video games and manga from Book-Off, then returned to Yodobashi for some gifts for the family. The little green edamame is Mame-shiba, which was a just beginning fad when we were over there (only one store in Akihabara had any merchandise). There a lots of Mame-shiba (half edamame, half dog) who give you advice... well, best to just see for yourself . This is just one of 9 commercials (so far), each featuring a different Mame-shiba.
In Asakusa, the fake sushi from a shop on Kappabashi-dori ($40!!). In Odaiba, we bought the DS games, Hetera figure, and the Smile Slime from the Toys R Us at Aqua City, the Rilakuma magnet and t-shirt at Decks, the paw keychain at Cats Livin', and the unchi (poop) capsule toys at the Pallete Town arcade. At Seibu in Ikebukuro , we bought the YMCK CD, the edamame keychains, the Rilakuma calendar, and the postcards.
Our town held its biannual townwide yardsale, so we decided to venture out, knowing this would probably be the last chance we'd have this season.

The NES score came at one of the last sales of the day. The son, who was about our age, said he had N64 and NES games when we asked, and we said we were interested in anything he had. He only brought out the NES games, which we were glad of. We've picked up a lot of N64 games, and are really more interested in NES stuff. Anyway, we offered $5 for everything. He was hesitating, and sort of countered with $10. We stuck to the $5 offer and finally he said ok. In the car, we took a quick look over everything and saw a good chunk of titles we didn't own yet, which made the score even better. And the per game breakdown worked out to be 12 cents!

We scored the Donkey Kong Country video at the second sale of the day. We had asked the woman running the sale if she had any games, which she apologized and said she didn't. As we were walking back to the car, she called after us and came down her driveway with the video. She said she just saw this and thought we might be interested in it. She said we could just take it, and handed it to us. We thanked her and wished her luck for the rest of the day. Back in our old haunts, that would have never happened. The plus with the video was Liz had it back in the day - it was a preorder bonus for Donkey Kong Country - which at one point was donated or given away. It's always nice when things come back again. This happened back in 2006 with the free Nintendo Power magazines.

We had a fun morning and it was nice to be out yardsaling again, especially that we didn't come home empty-handed! Now the plan is to start getting our game room going. We'll probably start sometime in January (once we get through the wedding, honeymoon, and holiday season).Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-65380649318931259862008-08-16T06:59:00.001-04:002010-03-13T15:30:30.779-05:00We're not dead! - ...just dead tired. It's been almost TWO months since we've last updated. Wow!

First, let us assure you that we are both alive and well. Our passion for videogame hunting is as strong as it's ever been, but unfortunately, there have been many roadblocks that have made yardsaling difficult lately.

- Gas prices. We don't include the cost of gas in our finds, because we have always considered that to be a "cost of doing business". That being said, the cost of doing business has doubled since last year! We usually go through 1/3 of a tank per yardsaling session, and that's really been starting to add up this year.

- New house! You may have noticed the absence of reddish/orangish/pinkish carpet as a background in our pictures lately, and that's because we just moved into our new (first!) house at the end of April. There has been a lot to do around here, which takes time and energy away from other things. We're loving it though!

- New town. We no longer live in our old stomping grounds, which we knew like the back of our hand. We have a whole bunch of new towns to learn, and everything is a lot more rural and spread out around here than back home.

- Fewer sales. We don't know what the cause is, but there are noticeably fewer sales out here than we're used to. Even if we took into account ALL of the surrounding towns within a 45 minute driving radius, we still wouldn't find as many sales as we used to. We're hoping that this is more of a result of the bad economy and high gas prices, but we'll see how this improves in the coming years.

- Getting married! After seven wonderful years together, Dom + Liz are getting married! We're tying the knot in October, and then spending a two-week honeymoon in Japan. You can bet that we're going to buy lots of fun things over there, and that we'll put tons of pictures up here! This also means that a lot of time and energy has been going into planning everything.

None of these things is individually enough to keep us from yardsaling, but all together, you can see how we've been having an unusually busy summer. We've been itching to get out there, but unfortunately with everything going on, it's been very difficult. Thank you for your emails and comments inquiring to our whereabouts. We're not sure what the autumn months may bring in terms of having time to yardsale, but stay tuned! At the very least, we will definitely be back in full swing in 2009.

Thank you all for your continued support! We're still going to have lots of fun things coming your way, and I encourage you to keep checking back. We can't wait for our Japan trip, and we also can't wait to set up our Room of Doom! Have you wanted to see all of our yardsale finds together, set up into one massive collection? Soon, you will be able to. We have the perfect room for it, we just need to find time to set everything up.

Make sure to try out Dom + Liz's Visual Route Planner in your yardsaling planning! We custom-made it to fit our own yardsaling needs, and we hope that it can save you as much time as it does for us.

I hope all of you will continue the yardsaling tradition in our temporary absence. If you haven't gone out yet, try it! You may just find that diamond in the rough, and then you'll have a story for a lifetime.

It rained off an on all week, but fortunately today was hot and sunny.

We got a few "A bunch of people asked about videogames" responses today, but luckily no misses. Interested to know who would be asking - people our age, parents, little kids? We're a little worried that we have some competition, especially where it's a smallish town.

We are always looking out for 80's stuff, so it was great to finally find some original Rainbow Brite dolls. The woman at this sale had kids who grew up in the 80's, so it was nice to see something from that era, rather than the usual Dora the Explorer stuff we usually see. When we asked about videogames, she said they had just sold some Genesis stuff a month before at a school sale.

Some of you may be puzzled why we are buying antique muffin pans. Liz used to vacation in a place that made muffins daily with these pans, and we've never seen them in the field. Amazingly, we found 2 within a few weeks of each other. The muffins come out really really good using these pans, so now we can make our own!

The suitcase may also seem out of place. Now that we own a house, we have to buy anything that we need. Before when we went on vacation, we would just use our parents' luggage. Because we are going on vacation soon, the goal today was to find a suitcase. We never really pay attention to how often suitcases show up at yardsales, but at the second sale we hit, there were tons of suitcases and trunks for sale. It's funny how it worked out perfectly!

We've been noticing over the last couple years that we see more and more N64 and less of everything that came out before (NES, SNES, Gen, etc). It really seems like we're in the N64 hey-day for yardsales. It'll be sad when we reach the day that PS2, GameCube, and XBox is all we find at a yardsale, which of course is inevitable.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-67196257063905159122008-06-13T20:00:00.004-04:002010-03-14T10:58:57.952-04:00Week 9 [06.14.08] + [06.15.08]
Day Total: $1.00

Sales Visited: 24
[06-14-2008]
The weather was great, but no deals to be had. Picked up the books at one of the first sales of the day, so the rest of the day dragged. There were only a few videogame sightings.

Our first videogame sighting was pretty late - around 10:45am. A NES, Genesis, and PS1 and a box of NES, Gen, and PS1 games. Everything was encrusted with dirt and grime, and of course, way overpriced. The NES was $10, the other 2 systems weren't marked but we could imagine the price. The box of games were unmarked so we asked how much they were. She immediately snapped back "$2 each", then went on to say, "5 people have asked me how much the games were I should probably put a price tag". Then, made no move to do so. 5 people have asked and it was obvious no one had bought any of the games. We didn't even bother to haggle. The games were mostly commons, things we had, and we could tell by her attitude that she wasn't going to bargain with us.

The very next sale, same thing. She had a ton of junk, lots of things like buttons and sequins and rusted old tools and wires. She had a large wood platform that was the "dollar table" with more junk, and a Game Boy carrying case. We inquired if she had any games, and she responded that she had an XBox. We weren't interested, so we asked if she'd take a quarter for the carrying case (we pick these up for a quarter all the time). She flat out said "no". We said "ok", put the case back, and started to walk away. She then added, "Everything on that table is $1". We said, "Well, we thought we'd try". Rolling our eyes, we left. Two in a row.

A few sales later, we saw a PS2 slim and 3 bargain bin games for $50, which was advertised in their ad. We passed, and as we were leaving a guy around our age walked up to the sale. We typically don't see anyone else our age yardsaling, so we looked to see where he'd go. He walked right over to the PS2, and by the time we had turned around the car to head to the next sale, he was walking away with the bundle. Not sure if he's competition. There was one sale earlier where they had sold an Atari bundle, but anyone could have bought it. we'll have to see what happens.

Hopefully next week will be better.

Quick Freecycle pick-up. 14 N64 games, posted last night at 6:30PM. didn't see until this morning and quickly sent over an email asking if they were still available. She responded that they were and we headed over. Woman was very nice, said that she was still cleaning out her attic and that there might be more games. She said she saved our email and would let us know if she finds anything else!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-62373480864670277632008-06-08T11:49:00.004-04:002010-03-14T10:59:14.525-04:00Week 8 [06.07.08]
Day Total: $8.00

Sales Visited: 21
The hottest day of the year - well into the 90's - yielded a handful of small purchases.

The PS2 was marked $5, and the seller told us he wasn't sure if it worked. His kids had it at college and then when they moved back home, they "abandoned" it. We offered $1, saying we'd take a chance, which he accepted. Once home, we performed "the test" - PS2 cd-rom, PS2 dvd, PS1, and DVD - and everything worked perfectly fine! Definitely worth the dollar gamble!

We never owned a GBA SP, and the few we've seen in the field were either too expensive or badly beat-up. These were in good shape all-around, asking $5 each. We offered $5 for both which the seller quickly accepted. They both work great.

One sale we went to was rather interesting in terms of setup. It was on a farm, and the yard sale was along the driveway, which was somewhat long and had a grass divider down the middle. The sale was penned off with small wood poles and rope, with an opening to walk into each section. Each section was marked 25 cents, 50 cents, etc. up to $5 and $10. The front of the sale had the most "expensive" items, and as you walked up the driveway, the sections became cheaper. Right at the front of the sale was a Genesis with 4 games marked $50. Yeah right. For the hell of it, we grabbed Shining in the Darkness, a game we didn't own, and offered a quarter on it. To our surprise, the seller took it with no hesitation. Sometimes making an offer on something overpriced works, though usually it doesn't...

Near the end of the day, we happened upon a sale that was charging $4 per DVD, which was a red flag right off the bat. Near the DVDs was a box full of PS1 games, not priced. Upon inspection, it was mostly common stuff. The only one that was of any interest was Bushido Blade. Since there were no prices, we offered a quarter. The seller called his wife over and she flatly said "No, the games are $3 each". We then offered 50 cents, she again responded "No." We said we could do a dollar. She said "No". We said, "You're going to stay firm at $3 at 12 o'clock?" She didn't respond but the husband answered, "I guess so." No wonder they had full boxes of DVDs and the PS1 games.

The cast iron muffin pan has a personal and sentimental value, and the muffins come out so delicious!

Hit a local flea market after yardsaling, and were not surprised to find it as typical as flea markets get. The usual videogame vendors were present and accounted for, complete with overpriced common games in terrible shape. There was also a snack hut that had the standard burgers and fries, chinese food, and even korean food.

All in all it was a good day, and you couldn't ask for better weather.Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-8481588594678922872008-05-31T07:21:00.004-04:002010-03-14T11:00:07.973-04:00Week 7 [05.31.08]
Day Total: $4.50

Sales Visited: 10
Short day. The weather appeared to be promising, but it quickly (and unexpectedly!) turned into a heavy downpour.

Both of these purchases came from neighboring houses that were part of a street sale. The first house had several GBA, GBC, and XBox games. He was asking 75 cents each for the GBA and GBC games. We picked out 4 and CIF'd $1. The seller responded with "How about $1.50?" Of course, we agreed!

Next door, the seller was asking 50 cents each for the N64 games. We tried $2 for the lot, but he refused. We then tried $3 and he hesitated for a bit, then finally said ok. There were some rather beat-up guides for GameCube that he wouldn't include because they "didn't go with" the games we bought. No big loss.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 made a mediocre day a little sweeter.

We came upon this particular sale near the beginning of the day. We found the Sega Sports cushion and inquired if they had any other games. The woman at the sale was actually the sister of the seller, who had run out to get some coffee. We waited for nearly 10 minutes, then decided to go, but left our name and number. We paid 25 cents for the cushion and were on our way.

The seller called back a half hour later saying she had videogames out and that her sister must have not known they were there. It was a rather small sale and while we were waiting, we looked at everything and there were definitely no video games. We asked what she had and if she could tell us what games. She told us that she had about 10 games, and amidst all of the sports crap, there was a gem: MvC2. We asked how much she was looking to get, and she said $10 for the whole bundle, which isn't too bad at all. We thanked her and said we'd be back later.

So after scoping out the other sales and taking care of an errand, we headed back. The sister recognized us walking up and waved the seller over, who brought out a duffel bag filled with the Dreamcast stuff. We asked if she'd take $3 for everything, to which she replied incredulously, "Only 3!?" We were about to switch into haggle mode when she laughed and said, "Sure that's fine!" Sometimes you can't tell when people are joking or serious! But what made the deal extra sweet was that of all the games, MvC2 was completely mint, while all the others were beat up, scratched, and had cracked cases. We wondered if maybe the kids just never played MvC2 and were always playing their sports games, thus those were more worn.

We offered $5 on the GameCube, which was marked $20. We should've gone a bit lower, using the lack of A/V cables as a haggling point, but mistakes happen.

Nothing else to report. There weren't many sales going on, but that could be attributed to the long holiday weekend. At least the weather was great!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-27541491936675822772008-05-18T09:58:00.004-04:002010-03-14T11:00:49.436-04:00Week 5 [05.17.08]
Day Total: $15.75

Sales Visited: 40
Our first outing in our new neighborhood was a town-wide sale, and the day did not disappoint!

The first N64 bundle was our first find of the day. They were asking $15, but we talked them down to $5. We didn't have a boxed Majora's Mask, so it was a nice pick-up. They also had dog who kept bringing a stick over in his mouth, wanting us to play fetch with him. He was so cute!

Everything else we picked up required little haggling, as everything was already priced low - a big change from what we're used to. People seemed friendlier, too. We're hoping that's a good sign for the future.

We got the XBox demos at a sale that had everything on a flatbed truck. The Legend of Dragoon promo was 50 cents, but everything else was found in a big box marked "FREE". We scooped up all the demos and some miscellaneous movies.

We attempted to CIF $1 for the Dragon Ball manga and FF8. The girl said she wanted $1 for FF8, and $3 for the manga. We were surprised she was only asking $1 for the sealed FF8. We expected at least $10. Anyway, we countered with $2 for everything and she accepted.

Fantasy novels are rarely found on our adventures; it's usually the same Crichton, Grishman, and King books at every sale. One particular sale had a few boxes of assorted books, and a good amount of fantasy. Asking prices were also good: 25 cents per book, 5/$1. We started to pick a few out, then decided why not buy the whole box. We CIF'd $2 to the seller, who thought about it for a few moments, and then said "sure". It was really fun to buy a whole box of books!

At one sale there was a young guy (20-something) squatting down looking through CDs. He must've been wearing loose pants and no underwear: he was showing half his ass down the driveway! Not something anyone would want to find at a yardsale.

It was an all-around fun day, and people were in good spirits and easy-going when it came to bargaining. We hit a surprisingly high number of sales, and got to the know the area a lot better. We're really excited for this season!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3108351139292394924.post-51882085390510574702008-04-26T16:43:00.002-04:002010-03-13T15:30:30.804-05:00Week 4 [04.26.08]
Day Total: $0.00

Sales Visited: 37

Wow, what a bust! I don't think we ever had a day like today. We hit nearly 40 sales and came up with absolutely zero. We missed some Playstation stuff at the second sale of the day, heard a few "a ton of people have been asking about videogames", and everyone else had nothing. We even saw our competition from last year (flea market vendor) at one sale.

Needless to say, it was a long morning. In a way though, it was good. We're moving next weekend and will no longer be 'saling where we used to. Had we found a ton of stuff this weekend, it would've been harder to say goodbye to this area. The pickings have been slimmer in recent years, so we're looking forward to going 'saling in a new place.

We've just bought our first home, which has a LOT of space. We will finally be able to properly display and play all of the things we've purchased over the last few years. No more storage bins! We have a huge finished basement, which will be the game room. we'll take lots of pictures once it's up and running and post them here on the site.

We'll be back 'saling in a couple weeks, so we're hoping we'll have some positive reports from our new neighborhood!Liz Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11353314675107090093noreply@blogger.com0
